Neel Acharya, a dedicated student pursuing a double major in computer science at Purdue University‘s John Martinson Honors College, has been confirmed dead by officials. The heartbreaking news comes after Neel went missing on Sunday, and his body, identified as a “college-aged male,” was discovered on Purdue’s campus.

Neel Acharya’s mother, Goury Acharya, made an emotional appeal on social media seeking help to find her son, who was last seen by a cab driver around the university campus. The family’s distress was evident in her post on X (formerly Twitter): “Our son Neel Acharya is missing since yesterday Jan 28 (12:30 AM EST) He is studying in Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off in Purdue university. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything.”

The Purdue Exponent, the university’s independent media agency, reported that the news of Neel Acharya’s death was conveyed to the computer science department by interim department head Chris Clifton. “It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Neel Acharya, has passed away,” Clifton said in an email.

The tragic incident involving Neel Acharya comes on the heels of another heartbreaking event where an Indian student, Vivek Saini, was brutally killed with repeated blows from a hammer by a homeless man in a store in Georgia’s Lithonia. The Consulate General of India in Atlanta condemned the attack, confirming immediate assistance to Saini’s family and facilitating the repatriation of his remains back to India.

As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding Neel Acharya’s passing, the Purdue University community mourns the loss of a promising student. The Consulate General’s engagement underscores the importance of providing support to affected families during such distressing times.
