Tragic Suicide of Online BTech Student in Kota Raises Concerns

In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old student enrolled in an online BTech final year course in Chennai was found dead by suicide in his rented room in Kota’s Vigyan Nagar area. The distressing event unfolded on Thursday night when a tiffin delivery boy discovered the untouched meal box outside the door, leading to the shocking discovery of the student hanging from the fan.

The victim, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had been staying in Kota since 2016 and was pursuing an online BTech course from Chennai. He initially joined a coaching institute in Kota in 2016 to prepare for the JEE entrance exam but continued to reside in Kota even after leaving the coaching center in 2019, opting for online classes.

The student’s body was found after a delivery boy, noticing the untouched tiffin, raised the alarm, prompting the landlord to break open the door and discover the tragic scene. No suicide note was recovered, and the reason behind the suicide remains unknown, according to Kaushalya Galav, the SHO of Vigyan Nagar police station. The police have initiated an autopsy, and the family has been informed about the unfortunate incident.

This marks the third reported suicide in Kota this year, raising concerns about the mental health and well-being of students in the city. Kota is known as an educational hub where students from across the country come to prepare for competitive exams, such as the JEE for admission to top engineering colleges. Last year, Kota witnessed 26 student suicides, shedding light on the immense pressure and challenges faced by students pursuing competitive exams.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the student’s suicide, with no clear motive identified at this time. The body has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. The tragic incident underscores the need for increased mental health support for students facing the stress of competitive exams, especially in educational hubs like Kota. The authorities must address these concerns and work towards creating a supportive environment for students dealing with academic pressures.
