Prime Minister Modi Lambasts TMC Over Sandeshkhali Assaults

In a fiery speech at a Nari Shakti Vandan rally organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Barasat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for its alleged involvement in the sexual assaults in Sandeshkhali, warning that the women’s anger would not be contained within the troubled region but would surge throughout West Bengal.

Addressing the gathering in North 24-Parganas district, Modi asserted, “TMC has committed a grave sin by torturing mothers and sisters. Anybody’s head will hang in shame after seeing what happened in Sandeshkhali.” He criticized the TMC government for shielding the perpetrators and highlighted the judicial interventions from both the high court and the Supreme Court.

Sandeshkhali, gripped by tensions since February 7 due to allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault by TMC leaders, is situated approximately 80 km northwest of Barasat in the same district. BJP leaders reported that Modi met with five women from Sandeshkhali who attended the rally.

“The women’s rage will not be confined to Sandeshkhali. The storm of Sandeshkhali will sweep through Bengal. I can see that Bengal’s nari shakti has come out to put an end to TMC’s mafiaraj. The TMC has faith in their tyrant leaders. They don’t have faith in the sisters and daughters of Bengal,” Modi declared.

However, TMC responded swiftly, with Derek O’Brien, TMC Parliamentary leader in Rajya Sabha, questioning the PM’s stance on women’s issues and the representation of women in the BJP. He posted on his social media handle, “Today PM @narendramodi lectured on Nari Shakti. 3 Qs to you, Sir: Why are there 51 cases of crimes against women every hour? Why does BJP have 13% women in LS, why only 14% women in 195 candidate list? Why no action against BJP MP charged with sexually harassing wrestler?”

Prime Minister Modi also took aim at the INDIA alliance, alleging that central schemes on women empowerment and security were not being implemented in states where its partners held power. He stated, “All the leaders of INDIA alliance have freaked out knowing that NDA is going to return to power at the Centre.”

Hours before Modi’s address, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a hike in the remunerations of ASHA and Anganwadi workers. In a video posted on Facebook, Banerjee stated that the remunerations of ASHA and Anganwadi workers would be raised by ₹750 per month, and Anganwadi helpers’ remuneration would be increased by ₹500 per month.

The political discourse in West Bengal intensifies as both BJP and TMC exchange verbal blows, leaving the electorate in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
