Gujarat University’s vice-chancellor, Neerja Gupta, addressed the issue, highlighting that the provocation for the violence couldn’t have been solely the act of offering namaz. Gupta emphasized the need to sensitize foreign students about local culture and practices, suggesting that their ignorance in this regard might have contributed to the unfortunate incident. She pointed out that the consumption of non-vegetarian food by foreign students and the disposal of leftovers could potentially clash with Gujarat’s predominantly vegetarian society.

The assault, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, depicts a student allegedly attacking another individual who voiced concerns about the offering of namaz within the university campus. Gujarat Police swiftly responded to the incident, making several arrests in connection with the attack. An FIR was filed against approximately 25 unidentified individuals on charges including rioting, unlawful assembly, causing hurt, property damage, and criminal trespass.

The backlash against the attack has been swift and widespread. Opposition parties have criticized the BJP-led government in Gujarat, questioning the state’s handling of law and order. The Ministry of External Affairs also weighed in on the matter, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal acknowledging the incident and affirming the state government’s commitment to taking strict action against the perpetrators.

The episode underscores the importance of promoting cultural understanding and tolerance within academic institutions. It serves as a reminder of the imperative to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect for diversity. As investigations into the incident continue, authorities are urged to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, both domestic and international, studying in Gujarat’s educational institutions.
