Battle for Tamluk Seat: Former Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Takes on Trinamool’s Debangshu Bhattacharya

In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Bengal, one of the most closely watched contests is set to unfold in the Tamluk constituency, where political heavyweights clash for supremacy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, while the Trinamool Congress has fielded its young leader and social media cell head, Debangshu Bhattacharya.

Gangopadhyay’s Entry into Politics

Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who resigned from his position as a judge earlier this month and swiftly joined the BJP, garnered attention in 2021 for his firm directives to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding alleged irregularities in teacher recruitment by the West Bengal School Service Commission. However, his transition from judiciary to politics has not been without controversy, with the Trinamool alleging political motives behind his previous rulings.

Trinamool’s Response

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her criticism of Gangopadhyay’s political switch, labeling him a “BJP babu” and vowing to defeat him in the elections. She has accused him of denying jobs to thousands of students through his judicial decisions and pledged to challenge him fiercely at the polls. In response, the Trinamool strategically nominated Debangshu Bhattacharya, a young and energetic leader, to counter Gangopadhyay’s candidacy.

Debangshu Bhattacharya’s Profile

Debangshu Bhattacharya, aged 27, has a strong background in student politics and has been associated with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. He has played a crucial role in managing the party’s social media presence since 2022 and is credited with crafting the popular “Khela Hobe” campaign song during the 2021 Bengal elections. With his youthfulness and political acumen, Bhattacharya poses a formidable challenge to Gangopadhyay’s bid for the Tamluk seat.

Political Landscape in Tamluk

Despite being a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress for the past 15 years, the Tamluk constituency bears the influence of Suvendu Adhikari, who recently switched allegiance to the BJP. Adhikari’s family has a significant presence in the area, with his brother Dibyendu Adhikari winning the seat in previous elections. However, with Suvendu Adhikari’s defection to the BJP, the dynamics of the electoral battle in Tamluk have shifted, posing a challenge for the Trinamool to retain its stronghold.

The contest for the Tamluk seat emerges as a battleground where political veterans clash with emerging leaders, shaping the narrative of Bengal’s electoral landscape. As the election fervor intensifies, all eyes remain on Tamluk, where Abhijit Gangopadhyay and Debangshu Bhattacharya lock horns in a high-stakes battle for political supremacy.
