Political Rivalry Turns Violent as Shiv Sena Leader Mahesh Gaikwad Injured in the Shootout
In a shocking turn of events, BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad was arrested on Saturday for allegedly opening fire at Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad, escalating a longstanding political feud between the two factions. The incident unfolded at the Hill Line Police Station in Ulhasnagar, leaving both politicians injured.
Gaikwad and a supporter reportedly sustained injuries from five bullets during a heated conversation between the BJP MLA and the city chief, Mahesh Gaikwad. Senior inspector Anil Jagtap was present at the police station during the incident.
Mahesh Gaikwad, badly injured in the altercation, is currently under medical supervision at Thane’s Jupiter Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
According to DCP Sudhakar Pathare, “Mahesh Gaikwad and Ganpat Gaikwad had differences about something, and they came to the police station to make a complaint. At that time, they talked, and Ganpat Gaikwad fired at Mahesh Gaikwad and his people. Two people have been injured in this. An investigation is underway.”

DCP Pathare further stated, “Three people, including BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, arrested in connection with Ulhasnagar firing incident. Six rounds of firing took place.”
Opposition leaders have condemned the incident, expressing their concerns about the growing political violence in the state. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey criticized the state government, saying, “This firing has taken place inside the police station. The one who opened fire was BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, and the one who was shot at was Shiv Sena Shinde Faction leader Mahesh Gaikwad. It is unfortunate that an MLA who needs to work for the welfare of lakhs of people is shooting people. In the 3-engine government, leaders of two parties are fighting and trying to kill each other.”
Youth Congress president Srinivas BV lambasted the ruling BJP-Sena alliance for the incident, alleging that the shooter is close to deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, while the victim is close to chief minister Eknath Shinde. “Ramrajya in Maharashtra!” he posted on social media, highlighting the alarming state of political affairs.
The root cause of the attack is believed to be the ongoing rivalry between Ganpat Gaikwad and Mahesh Gaikwad, both eyeing the Kalyan East Legislative Assembly seat. The police are currently investigating the underlying reasons behind the violent confrontation.
As this story develops, residents and political observers await further details and hope for a swift resolution to the escalating tensions in Ulhasnagar.
