Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Announces Resignation Amidst Controversial Term
In a surprising turn of events, Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has announced his resignation, sparking speculation about his potential entry into politics. The judge, known for his headline-making rulings on various issues, shared his decision with reporters, stating that he will step down on Tuesday. While he refrained from directly addressing questions about entering politics, the possibility looms large.
“I will resign from the post of Justice of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday,” he confirmed, promising to address further inquiries after the formal submission of his resignation. Responding to an invitation from Kunal Ghosh to join politics, Justice Gangopadhyay acknowledged the political differences but praised Ghosh as a good human being.
The judge revealed that he would submit his resignation to the President of India on Tuesday, with copies forwarded to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Gangopadhyay gained attention for issuing directives to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate to investigate alleged irregularities in the recruitment processes of teaching and non-teaching staff in state government-sponsored and aided schools. His proactive stance on these matters brought both praise and criticism.
Earlier this year, Justice Gangopadhyay found himself embroiled in controversy when he accused his colleague, Justice Soumen Sen, of working for a political party. This accusation followed a division bench’s decision to stay a single-judge order for a CBI probe into medical admission irregularities. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the matter. Additionally, Justice Sen had stayed an order by Justice Gangopadhyay, which called for a CBI investigation into allegations of fake caste certificates issued in Bengal.
