Illegal Sand Mining Case Overview
The investigation into the ‘illegal’ sand mining money laundering case was initiated after Bihar Police registered 20 FIRs against Broadsons Commodities Pvt. Ltd. (BCPL), a company, and its directors. The allegations pointed to their involvement in illegal mining and the sale of sand without utilizing e-challans. The ED’s probe revealed that the case generated proceeds of crime amounting to ₹161 crore.
According to the ED, a syndicate controls the alleged illegal sand trade, investing funds in BCPL. This syndicate reportedly profits from the illicit sale of sand.
Previous Arrests and Developments
In the past year, the probe agency arrested Bihar MLC and JD(U) leader Radha Charan Sah, along with his son Kanhaiya Prasad, and BCPL directors Mithilesh Kumar Singh, Baban Singh, and Surendra Kumar Jindal in connection with the case. A charge sheet had been filed by the ED against the accused in November 2023 before a special PMLA court in Patna. The individuals are currently in jail under judicial custody.
Political Reaction
Reacting to the ED’s actions, RJD spokesperson Rishi Mishra criticized the BJP, stating, “The BJP has lost trust in its own leaders and workers. It seems to have realized that they will not be able to fetch votes for the party. Hence, it has reposed its entire faith in the ED, the CBI, and the I-T department,” as quoted by PTI.
As developments unfold, the arrest of Subhash Yadav adds another layer to the ongoing investigation, shedding light on the intricate web of financial transactions and alleged illegal activities surrounding Bihar’s sand mining industry.
