In anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Delhi Police have intensified their alertness and surveillance, particularly in communally sensitive areas. A memo issued on February 2nd instructed top police officers in the city to closely monitor public sentiment. The directive emphasized the need for increased vigilance, especially in areas with religious significance, following a court order allowing Hindus to worship in a cellar at Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque.
The memo stated, “The emotive issue is being discussed among the members of another community in Delhi on Social Media and personal Spaces. As such, there is a need for monitoring the mood and temper of both the communities and maintaining extra vigil around religious spaces, especially around Mosques during Friday prayers on 02.02.2024.”
The Gyanvapi mosque gained attention recently as members of a Hindu priests’ family started praying in a cellar following a district court’s order to unseal it. The premises were sealed 30 years ago under the orders of then Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, shortly after the Babri Masjid demolition.
The alert from Delhi Police comes in the aftermath of a mosque being razed in Delhi and the consecration of the Ram temple on January 22nd. The memo highlights the significance of the Gyanvapi issue for another community in the context of the Ram temple consecration.
Police authorities are closely monitoring any attempts to incite discord between communities and are particularly focused on individuals and groups accused of instigating violence during the citizenship law protests in 2020. The directive includes checking the travel details and other activities of these suspects.
The North East District Police, which has remained on high alert since 2020, maintains a list of individuals suspected of potentially disrupting the communal harmony and atmosphere in the region. As the Lok Sabha elections approach, the heightened vigilance aims to ensure the safety and security of all communities and prevent any untoward incidents.
