Farmer Leader Appeals to PM Modi Amidst Ongoing Protests for MSP Guarantee

In a recent development, prominent farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the concerns of the protesting farmers regarding the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Pandher emphasized that the farmers played a crucial role in bringing Modi to power and warned that the nation would not forgive the BJP-led Centre if the grievances of the farming community were not addressed.

Pandher, who is actively coordinating the massive protest, expressed his concern about the deployment of paramilitary personnel in villages in Haryana to halt the farmers’ march. He appealed to the Prime Minister, stating, “We have told the government that you can kill us, but please don’t oppress the farmers. We request the Prime Minister to come forward and put an end to this protest by announcing a law on the MSP guarantee for the farmers.”

Highlighting the peaceful nature of the ongoing protest, Pandher reassured that the farmers would continue their peaceful demonstration. “We have tried our best from our side. We attended the meetings, every point was discussed, and now the decision has to be taken by the central government. We will remain peaceful…The Prime Minister should come forward and accept our demands.”

Yesterday, it was announced that the farmers would resume their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest from the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border. This decision followed the rejection of the Centre’s proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton at MSP by government agencies for the next five years.

The Central government estimates that more than 1200 tractors and 14,000 farmers are currently present at the Shambhu border. In preparation for the protest, farmers have brought bulldozers, JCB machines, and heavy machinery to break through police barricades. Special attention has been given to ensuring the safety of those operating the machinery, protecting them from pellet guns used by the police.

The farmers have also equipped themselves with gas masks to negotiate with teargas attacks, as they anticipate confrontations with law enforcement. On the other side, the police have come fully prepared with loaded trucks, buses, barricades, iron barbed wires, and nails. Loaded shipping containers have been strategically placed to stop the farmers’ advance, with concrete extensively used to reinforce the barricades.

Approximately 8,000 personnel have been stationed at the Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders in Delhi to manage the situation. The Punjab and Haryana high court has recently addressed the use of tractor-trolleys on highways, emphasizing the constitutional duties of the protesters while urging the police to seize bulldozers that may pose safety risks.

As tensions escalate, the nation watches closely, awaiting a resolution to the impasse between the farmers and the government over the crucial issue of MSP.
