Mumbai bid farewell to an era of melodious storytelling as iconic radio presenter Ameen Sayani, aged 91, passed away on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. Ameen, renowned for hosting the timeless show Binaca Geetmala, left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions with his distinctive voice and warm greetings.

The news of Ameen Sayani’s demise was confirmed by his son, Rajil Sayani, who revealed that his father succumbed to a heart attack on Tuesday night. Despite immediate medical attention at HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, Ameen Sayani could not be saved and was declared dead.

Ameen Sayani, born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, made an enduring impact on the Indian radio landscape with his iconic introduction, “Namaskar bhaiyon aur behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon (Hello sisters and brothers, this is your friend Ameen Sayani),” a phrase that continues to evoke strong nostalgia among listeners.

The maestro was most celebrated for hosting Binaca Geetmala, a show that graced the airwaves since 1952, initially on Radio Ceylon and later on Vividh Bharati (AIR), spanning over 42 years. Ameen Sayani’s illustrious career includes producing, compiling, or speaking for over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 spots/jingles since 1951. His versatility extended to the silver screen, where he appeared in movies like Bhoot Bungla, Teen Devian, Boxer, and Qatl, portraying the role of an announcer in various events.

As news of Ameen Sayani’s passing reverberates, tributes pour in on social media, highlighting his pivotal role in popularizing All India Radio in India. A fan on Twitter expressed, “Binaca Geetmala would always remain eternal. Thank you for the music and memories. RIP, Ameen Sayani Saab.” Another fondly recalled childhood memories, stating, “Have very fond memories of Binaca Geetmala during my childhood…Ameen Sayani was a legend at that time… rest in peace sir.”

Ameen Sayani’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday, allowing time for relatives to gather in Mumbai on Wednesday, marking the end of an era in the world of Indian radio.
