The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, was brought to light by a devoted member residing near the temple premises who discovered the offensive graffiti, as reported by ANI.

The defacement included derogatory slogans against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside the name of Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale written in black ink. The Hindu American Foundation shared images of the graffiti on social media earlier in the day, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The foundation, in a statement, emphasized the deliberate attempt to traumatize temple-goers by invoking the name of Bhindranwale, known for targeting Hindus. They categorically termed the incident as a hate crime, citing California’s definition and urged the Newark police to conduct a thorough investigation.

“The mention of the Khalistan terrorist kingpin #Bhindranwale, who targeted Hindus for murder, is specifically meant to traumatize temple-goers and create a fear of violence—meeting the CA definition of a hate crime,” the Hindu American Foundation wrote on social media.

Calling it a ‘targeted act,’ the Newark police assured the public of a comprehensive investigation into the matter. A police official expressed deep sadness over such acts, emphasizing their senselessness and the community’s zero tolerance for such incidents.

“I can also tell you that as a member of the Newark Police Department and the Newark community, we’re deeply saddened when these types of acts occur, and we think they’re senseless and they have no room. We won’t tolerate them here in Newark,” stated the police official. “So today, I wanted to make sure that you understand how seriously we take these situations and know that we will investigate as thoroughly as possible with utmost care and sensitivity.”

In response, the Indian consulate has called for a swift investigation into the matter and prompt action against the perpetrators. The incident has not only triggered a local response but has also gained attention on social media, with individuals and organizations expressing solidarity with the affected community. The consulate remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Indian diaspora and places strong emphasis on fostering a harmonious environment for all communities.
