Swift Action Prevents Piracy Attempt off East Coast of Somalia, Protecting Mariners and Securing Maritime Routes

The Indian Navy‘s warship INS Sumitra has achieved yet another triumph in its ongoing efforts to combat piracy, successfully thwarting an attack by armed Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea. The operation resulted in the rescue of 19 crew members and the fishing vessel Al Naeemi, marking the second successful anti-piracy mission in recent days.

In a daring rescue operation off the east coast of Somalia, the INS Sumitra intercepted the FV Iman, which had fallen prey to 11 Somali pirates. The vessel Al Naeemi and its 19 Pakistani nationals were successfully liberated, showcasing the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security.

The Indian Navy’s spokesperson, Commander Vivek Madhwal, highlighted the seamless execution of established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during the operation. The INS Sumitra’s swift and efficient response compelled the pirates to release all 17 crew members along with the vessel.

Post-rescue, the INS Sumitra remained vigilant and was pressed into action once again to respond to another distress call. On January 29, the warship intercepted an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel that had been boarded by pirates. Through coercive posturing and the effective deployment of its integral helicopter and boats, the INS Sumitra ensured the safe release of the crew and the vessel.

The Indian Navy emphasized the importance of these swift and persistent efforts, preventing the misuse of fishing vessels as mother ships for further acts of piracy on merchant vessels. The successful missions occurred approximately 850 nautical miles west of Kochi in the Southern Arabian Sea.

The recent incidents showcase the Indian Navy’s proactive approach to ensuring the safety of vessels and seafarers at sea. The deployment of mission-ready naval ships on anti-piracy and maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean region underscores the navy’s commitment to safeguarding critical sea lanes.

This accomplishment comes on the heels of the Indian Navy’s rapid response to a distress call from an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, Iman, hijacked by pirates. The vessel was quickly sanitized and released for onward transit, reflecting the navy’s dedication to maritime safety.

The successful anti-piracy operation follows the recent extinguishing of a fire onboard a commercial oil tanker by INS Visakhapatnam in the Gulf of Aden, showcasing the Indian Navy’s multi-faceted capabilities in responding to maritime emergencies.

The Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to maritime security is evident in its recent successes, including thwarting hijacking attempts and responding to distress calls in the critical sea lanes. As the navy continues to enhance its deployment in key regions, its resolve to ensure the safety of vessels and crew remains steadfast.
