Karnataka Water Supply Board Announces Measures to Conserve Scarce Water Resources
In response to the ongoing water crisis in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has taken decisive steps to curb excessive water usage. The Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KWSSB) announced a ban on the use of drinking water for non-essential purposes, including car washing, gardening, construction, and maintenance. Violators of these restrictions may face fines of ₹5,000.

The move follows recent efforts by the Bengaluru city administration to address water scarcity issues. On Thursday, the city administration introduced price caps for water tankers, taking into account the quantity of water and the delivery distance. Bengaluru is currently facing a severe water shortage, exacerbated by the drying up of over 3,000 borewells due to inadequate rainfall in the past monsoon season.
Local Measures and Water Conservation Efforts:
As the water crisis intensifies, apartment complexes and gated communities in Bengaluru have begun implementing internal regulations to manage water usage. Some residents have taken to social media to report notices from their societies, warning of dwindling water supplies. This underscores the urgent need for conservation measures at both the individual and community levels.
Government Response and Drought Relief Requests:
The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has been actively seeking drought relief from the Central government in recent months. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing water-related projects over other initiatives and focusing on irrigation to address the crisis effectively.
Political Dimension and Public Outcry:
The water crisis has not only led to increased governmental efforts but has also sparked a political debate between the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, representing the BJP, warned of protests in front of the Vidhana Soudha if the authorities failed to address the drinking water crisis promptly.
