Mizoram Government Grants General Consent to CBI for Crime Investigations

In a significant move towards enhancing transparency and accountability, the Mizoram government has reinstated general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for investigating offences within the state. A gazette notification released by the government on Thursday highlighted the decision, stating, “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the Government of Mizoram hereby accords consent to exercise powers and jurisdiction of the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment for investigation of offences in the state of Mizoram.”

This development marks a reversal of Mizoram’s decision in July 2015 to withdraw general consent to the CBI. According to the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, the CBI requires the state government’s consent to investigate cases within the state’s jurisdiction.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer and president of the Zoram Peoples’ Front (ZPM), expressed the government’s commitment to eradicating corruption for the welfare of citizens. He affirmed, “Committed to transparency and accountability… Our government is resolute in eliminating corruption for the welfare of our citizens,” in a statement posted on X on Thursday night.

Lalduhoma, who assumed office on December 8, has been vocal about his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. Shortly after taking charge, he pledged to allow the central agency to investigate all corruption cases in the state.

The ZPM, officially recognized in 2019 after its formation in 2017, secured an impressive victory in the assembly election held in November-December by winning 27 out of the total 40 seats. The move to grant general consent to the CBI aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering a corruption-free environment and upholding the principles of justice and accountability in Mizoram.
