Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s initiation into underwater metro services. Covering a 4.8-km stretch, the project has been executed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore. The East-West Metro includes the country’s deepest metro station, located 30 meters below ground level at Howrah, connecting vital areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.
2. Future Prospect: Central Railways on the East-West Corridor
While the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section has been inaugurated, the commencement of passenger services is slated for a later date, as per the Central Railways.
3. Enhancing Urban Mobility: New Train Services
PM Modi flagged off additional train services, focusing on improving urban mobility. These services include the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections, contributing to the city’s transportation infrastructure.
4. National Dedication: Metro Extensions and RRTS Corridor
The Prime Minister dedicated several crucial projects to the nation, including the Pune Metro’s Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension from SN Junction to Tripunithura, Agra Metro’s Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar stretch, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
5. Public Rally: Addressing the Masses in Barasat
Later in the day, PM Modi is expected to address a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, bringing the government closer to the people.
