Sachin Tendulkar Takes Stand Against Deepfake Misinformation; Urges Swift Action on Social Media

In a recent incident, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has vehemently denied false claims made in a deepfake video circulating on social media. The video, using artificial intelligence (AI), showcased Sachin supposedly endorsing an app that allegedly helped his daughter, Sara, earn money through online video games. Expressing his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), Sachin demanded quick action against the spread of such misinformation.

“Social Media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfakes,” Sachin wrote in a strongly-worded statement.

The Master Blaster labeled the video as “disturbing” and emphasized the misuse of technology in creating such content. He urged the public to report fake videos, advertisements, and applications that exploit the reputation of individuals.

One alarming aspect of the deepfake video is the accuracy of the audio, perfectly matching Sachin’s original voice. The sophisticated use of AI in creating such content raises concerns about the potential for deceptive practices. With multiple AI platforms capable of replicating authentic voices and visuals, the challenge of distinguishing between genuine and manipulated content becomes more significant.

This unfortunate incident isn’t the first time the Tendulkar family has fallen victim to online impostors. In November last year, Sara Tendulkar took to Instagram to address fake Twitter accounts spreading misinformation using her name. She expressed her dismay at the misuse of technology, calling out deepfake photos that misrepresented her reality.

Sara highlighted the need for social media platforms, including X, to take action against such fraudulent accounts impersonating public figures. She urged these platforms to suspend accounts engaged in misleading practices.

This incident reflects a growing challenge in the digital era, where advanced technologies can be exploited to create deceptive content. It underscores the importance of vigilant social media platforms and individuals in reporting and addressing instances of misinformation, deepfakes, and online impersonation.

Notably, back in 2018, a Mumbai engineer was arrested for creating a fake Twitter account of Sara Tendulkar. The incident led to an official complaint lodged by Sachin Tendulkar, highlighting the persistent challenges posed by online impostors.
