Veteran actress reveals niece Tabu’s cheeky remarks and husband Javed Akhtar’s surprising reaction
In the glitzy world of Bollywood, it’s not uncommon for on-screen moments to create ripples off-screen. The much-talked-about kissing scene between seasoned actors Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi in Karan Johar’s “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” released in July 2023, continues to be a subject of discussion. Shabana Azmi, in a recent interview with Zoom, shared intriguing insights into the behind-the-scenes dynamics, including her niece Tabu’s playful banter and husband Javed Akhtar’s unexpected reaction.
The film unfolds a love story between Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi’s characters, lost lovers who reunite as their grandchildren, portrayed by Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, fall in love. Jaya Bachchan plays Dharmendra’s wife, and the ensemble cast includes Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, and Shabana Azmi as Alia’s family.
In the interview, Shabana Azmi sheds light on the cheeky remarks made by her niece Tabu regarding the now-infamous kissing scene. Shabana humorously recounts Tabu’s teasing, stating, “Tabu, jo meri niece hai, itni shaitan hai. Vo kehti hai aapne hila ke rakh diya industry. Ab sab aapki age ki ladkiyaan keh rahi hai ke kiss hogi toh hum karenge (Tabu is so naughty; she teases me that I created a huge stir within the industry. She says now all the actresses of my age are saying they would do a film if there’s a kissing scene in it).”
Addressing the controversy surrounding the on-screen kiss, Shabana Azmi reflects on the unexpected attention it garnered. She shares, “I never thought it would create such a fuss! People are laughing and cheering when we do the kiss. While shooting, it was never an issue. It is true that I haven’t kissed much on screen before. But who wouldn’t want to kiss a man as handsome as Dharmendra?”
Shabana also reveals her husband Javed Akhtar’s reaction to her onscreen kiss with Dharmendra. She recalls, “Oh, he was not bothered. But what bothered him was my rowdy behavior. Throughout the film, I was applauding, whistling, cheering, and shouting. He was like, ‘I don’t know this woman sitting next to me.’ I went insane with excitement.”
As the controversy around the kissing scene continues to linger, it’s evident that “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” has left an indelible mark on both the audience and the industry, sparking conversations that go beyond the silver screen.
