Suvendu Adhikari Challenges West Bengal Police: Demands Proof in 24 Hours Over Alleged Khalistani Slur

In a fiery exchange, Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP’s leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly, has challenged the state police to provide evidence within 24 hours supporting their claim that a derogatory term was hurled at a Sikh police officer. The controversy erupted when a Sikh IPS officer, Jaspreet Singh, was allegedly referred to as a Khalistani by someone while enforcing Section 144 in the restive areas of Sandeshkhali in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.

Suvendu Adhikari Challenges West Bengal Police: Demands Proof in 24 Hours Over Alleged Khalistani Slur

The incident unfolded as Singh prevented BJP MLAs, including Adhikari, from entering the restricted zones. A video captured Singh expressing his frustration, saying, “You are calling me a Khalistani because I am wearing a turban. Is this your courage? If any policeman wears a turban and does his duty, he becomes Khalistani? Is this your level?” The confrontation continued with Singh defending his religious identity and urging BJP leaders not to indulge in such derogatory remarks.

The situation escalated with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee weighing in, accusing the BJP of divisive politics that crosses constitutional boundaries. She condemned the attempt to undermine the reputation of Sikh individuals and vowed to take lawful measures to protect Bengal’s social harmony.

The West Bengal police responded strongly, with ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar stating that legal action would be initiated against Adhikari for the alleged comment. Sarkar explained that the incident occurred during the deployment of a police force to enforce Section 144 in Dhamakhali, where Adhikari reportedly called the Sikh police officer a Khalistani during an altercation.

Challenging the allegations, Adhikari dared ADG Sarkar to substantiate the claim within 24 hours or face consequences. The BJP’s IT cell chief, Amit Malviya, took to social media, asserting that the West Bengal Police’s defense is crumbling and calling for a retreat to their barracks.

As the verbal sparring continues, this incident highlights the intersection of politics, religion, and law enforcement in West Bengal, further intensifying the ongoing tensions between political parties in the state.
