Swami Smaranananda Maharaj, the esteemed president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, breathed his last in Kolkata on Monday evening. At the age of 95, he succumbed to age-related ailments, as confirmed by a statement from the mission. Swami Smaranananda Maharaj had assumed the role of the 16th president of the order in 2017.

The revered spiritual leader had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in south Kolkata, which is operated by the Ramakrishna Mission. His health had attracted attention earlier this month when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Bengal, paid a visit to the hospital on March 5 to inquire about Swami Smaranananda’s well-being.

Following the news of his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to express his condolences and pay homage to Swami Smaranananda Maharaj. In his message, Modi hailed the late president’s lifelong dedication to spirituality and service, emphasizing the profound impact he had on countless individuals. Modi reminisced about his interactions with Swami Smaranananda, recalling a visit to Belur Math in 2020 and a recent hospital visit in Kolkata. The Prime Minister extended his sympathies to the devotees of Belur Math, invoking the prayer “Om Shanti” for the departed soul.

Similarly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also extended her heartfelt condolences, expressing deep sorrow at the passing of Swami Smaranananda Maharaj. She praised the spiritual leader for his profound contributions to the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, noting his role as a source of solace for millions of devotees worldwide. Mamata Banerjee conveyed her sympathies to Swami Smaranananda’s fellow monks, followers, and devotees.

Additionally, Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda shared his sorrow at the demise of Swami Smaranananda ji Maharaj, describing himself as extremely saddened by the loss.

The passing of Swami Smaranananda Maharaj marks the end of an era in the realm of spiritual leadership, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, wisdom, and profound service that will continue to inspire generations to come.
