Terrorists Ambush Army Truck in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch District: Second Attack in Less Than a Month

The ambush occurred at Dera Ki Gali, also known as DKG, in Poonch’s Surankote area, where terrorists targeted an army truck. Firing has been reported, and an ongoing encounter is underway as the army responds to the attack. Reinforcements and ambulances have been deployed to assess and manage the situation, with the focus on tracking down the attackers.

A Defence spokesman confirmed that the encounter is part of an intelligence-based operation initiated by the army in the region. “Based on hard intelligence, a joint operation was launched in Gen Area DKG last night, contact has been established today evening, and the encounter is in progress. Further details are being ascertained,” stated the spokesman.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a previous attack less than a month ago, where five soldiers, including two Captains, lost their lives during an anti-terror operation in Rajouri’s Kalakote. The Poonch region has witnessed an alarming increase in terrorist activities, becoming a hotbed for such incidents and major attacks on the army.

The region, which remained relatively free of terrorism between 2003 and 2021, has seen a surge in encounters since then. In April and May of this year alone, 10 soldiers were killed in action in twin attacks in the Rajouri-Poonch region. Over the past two years, more than 35 soldiers have lost their lives during anti-terror operations, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by the security forces in the area.

The recent ambush on an army truck in Poonch adds to the growing concern over the security situation in the region. As the encounter unfolds, authorities are working to gather more information about the attackers and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The frequency of such attacks underscores the need for continued vigilance and robust security measures to safeguard the lives of soldiers and maintain peace in the region.
