In a significant development, Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, accused of torturing villagers in the troubled Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal, was arrested on Thursday morning. The arrest took place at a house in Minakhah, North 24 Parganas district, where Sheikh Shahjahan was hiding, according to the police. A local court has now remanded him to 10-day police custody, following a plea for 14 days made by the police. The next court appearance for Sheikh Shahjahan is scheduled for March 10, as confirmed by Advocate Raja Bhowmick, his lawyer.

The Calcutta High Court, in a directive issued on Wednesday, allowed for the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan by agencies such as the CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED), or the West Bengal Police. This directive follows the court’s previous order on Monday, instructing the police to arrest the Trinamool Congress leader within seven days.

Sheikh Shahjahan had been on the run since January 5, when an ED team, investigating an alleged ration scam, was attacked by a mob of around 1,000 people during a raid on his house.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose welcomed the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan and emphasized the need to put an end to criminal activities in parts of Bengal. During a press conference, the Governor stated, “This is the beginning of an end. We have to put an end to the cycle of violence in Bengal. In parts of Bengal, the goons are ruling the roost. This must end, and the gangsters should be put behind bars.”

CV Ananda Bose further suggested that the Sandeshkhali incident is only the tip of the iceberg, hinting at a more extensive web of issues beyond what meets the eye. The Governor’s statement underscores the urgency to address and curb criminal activities that have allegedly permeated certain areas of West Bengal.
