Delhi Police Make Progress in Rashmika Mandanna Deepfake Video Investigation

In a recent development, the Delhi Police have made headway in the case of the deepfake video featuring Bollywood actress Rashmika Mandanna. While four suspects involved in uploading the manipulated video have been tracked down, the search continues for the main conspirator and creators of the video, as reported by ANI.

The incident occurred over a month ago when a deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna surfaced on social media, sparking conversations about digital safety. The video showcased a woman, identified as Zara Patel, dressed in a black workout onesie inside an elevator. Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), her face was altered to resemble that of the popular actress.

Swift action was taken by authorities to investigate the case. The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) of Delhi Police registered an FIR on November 11 against unidentified individuals involved in the creation and dissemination of the deepfake video. This came after the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the city police, prompting a thorough inquiry.

Rashmika Mandanna responded strongly to the deepfake video, expressing deep concern and highlighting the alarming vulnerability individuals face due to the misuse of technology. She stated that the incident was “extremely scary” not just for her but for anyone susceptible to harm through such manipulative practices.

The circulation of the fake video prompted the government to take a proactive stance. On November 24, the Ministry of Information Technology sent letters to social media platforms, reminding them of their responsibility to combat misinformation and deepfakes as mandated by Indian law. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw labeled deepfakes a “new threat to democracy” and announced the government’s intention to introduce new regulations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns about the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for creating deepfakes, categorizing them as a “new threat to democracy.” During a ‘Diwali Milan’ program at the BJP office in Delhi, he urged the media to play a role in raising awareness about this crisis. PM Modi shared an example of a deepfake video featuring himself performing garba, emphasizing the potential dangers of such manipulated content.

The ongoing investigation into the Rashmika Mandanna deepfake video underscores the challenges posed by digital manipulation and the urgent need for stringent measures to address and prevent the spread of deepfakes in the digital landscape.
