Pakistan Election 2024: Nawaz Sharif Emerges as Front-Runner Amidst Political Turmoil

As Imran Khan Remains in Jail, Nawaz Sharif and PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Vie for the Prime Minister’s Post

In the midst of a charged political landscape, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is positioned to reclaim the country’s leadership for a record fourth time. Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) faces a significant challenge after the Supreme Court upheld the election commission’s decision to strip PTI of its iconic cricket ‘bat’ symbol, leading PTI candidates to contest the polls independently.

Economic Challenges and Security Concerns Await the New Leader

Regardless of the election outcome on February 8, the incoming leader faces a daunting task of reviving Pakistan’s economy and addressing escalating security threats. Economic experts predict the urgent need for a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) program under more stringent conditions, following last year’s narrow escape from default with a $3 billion short-term loan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s fight against terrorism, spanning over two decades, is at a critical juncture. The resurgence of rebels since 2021 poses a formidable challenge, particularly with the Afghan Taliban’s rise to power. The new government must grapple with the militancy of banned groups such as the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and Baloch nationalists.

International Tensions Amplify Challenges

On the eastern front, tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated, with Islamabad accusing India of orchestrating an assassination campaign within Pakistani borders. India vehemently rejects these claims, further complicating the already delicate diplomatic relations. As India gears up for Lok Sabha elections by May, the return of the Narendra Modi-led government could add complexity to the situation.

Pakistan Army’s Influence in the Political Landscape

The role of the Pakistan Army in shaping the political narrative is unmistakable, with allegations of election manipulation favoring preferred candidates. In 2018, the army was accused of effectively “selecting” Imran Khan to replace Nawaz Sharif. This time around, experts suggest that Nawaz Sharif enjoys the support of the army.

Former Indian high commissioner to Islamabad, Ajay Bisaria, remarked, “What is scheduled to happen on February 8 seems less like an election and more like a selection because Pakistan’s Army has shown us in the past few days what result they are desiring in the upcoming elections.”

India’s Watchful Eye on Pakistan Election 2024

India closely monitors developments in Pakistan ahead of its own elections, particularly focusing on the Pakistan Army’s potential role in selecting the next prime minister. Concerns about Pakistan’s support for terrorism have prompted a stricter stance on national security matters by the Narendra Modi-led government.

Geopolitical expert C Raja Mohan stated, “General Munir is taking control amid the growing prospect that the old order in Pakistan is becoming unsustainable.” The significance of these elections lies in challenging the historic dominance of the army, as Imran Khan’s civilian leadership posed a formidable challenge in the previous term.

Nawaz Sharif’s Stance on India

Nawaz Sharif, in recent statements, has shown willingness to engage with India and acknowledges its global progress. However, his party’s manifesto maintains a commitment to pursue peace with India only if New Delhi reverses its decision to revoke Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

As the political landscape unfolds in Pakistan, the world watches with bated breath, recognizing the potential impact on regional stability and international relations.
