Series of Earthquakes Triggers Tsunami Warning in Central Japan

In a series of seismic events off the north coast of central Japan, a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck, prompting the issuance of a major tsunami warning. The U.S. Geological Survey and other monitoring agencies recorded the earthquake, leading to tsunami waves as high as 1.2 meters hitting Wajima port in Ishikawa prefecture, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A major tsunami warning was promptly issued for Ishikawa, with lower-level warnings and advisories extending to the western coast of Honshu. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi urged residents to evacuate to safer locations immediately after the seismic activity.

NHK TV, the Japanese public broadcaster, issued stern warnings of potential 5-meter (16.5 feet) torrents of water, emphasizing the need for people to seek refuge on higher ground or the tops of nearby buildings. Ongoing alerts indicated the possibility of recurrent tsunami waves, with warnings persisting nearly an hour after the initial alert.

Japan’s government is set to hold a news conference later in the day to provide updates and address the situation. As of now, reports on the extent of damage are not immediately available. The earthquake’s impact is being closely monitored, with authorities working to assess the overall impact on affected regions.

Notably, the earthquake’s epicenter encompasses a region housing a nuclear plant. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the operator of the facility, assured that they are diligently checking for any issues. At present, there are no immediate reports of irregularities, and TEPCO remains committed to ensuring the safety and stability of the nuclear facility.

Japan, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is renowned for its high seismic activity. In March 2011, a devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami led to meltdowns at a nuclear plant, highlighting the nation’s vulnerability to such natural disasters.

This story is developing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
