Tragic Loss: IIT Kanpur Senior Professor Collapses and Dies During Alumni Meet Lecture
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 53-year-old senior professor at IIT Kanpur, Sameer Khandekar, passed away due to a cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at an alumni meet. Mr. Khandekar, who served as the dean of student affairs and head of the mechanical engineering department, collapsed on the dais during the gathering on Friday.
Despite swift efforts to rush him to the hospital, Mr. Khandekar was declared dead upon arrival. It has been revealed that the professor had been diagnosed with high cholesterol levels approximately five years ago.
Former IIT Kanpur Director, Abhay Karandikar, expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden demise of Sameer Khandekar. Describing him as an outstanding teacher and researcher, Mr. Karandikar recounted the unfortunate incident. While delivering a lecture, Mr. Khandekar experienced severe chest pain and profuse sweating, collapsing on the stage before anyone could comprehend the situation.
The professor’s body has been placed at the IIT Kanpur health centre, and final rites are scheduled to be performed after the arrival of his only son, Pravah Khandekar, currently studying at Cambridge University. The entire IIT Kanpur community mourns the loss of a dedicated and esteemed educator, and heartfelt condolences pour in for Mr. Khandekar’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.
