In a significant move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a salary hike for Anganwadi and Asha workers, effective from April this year. The decision to boost the remuneration of these vital workers was revealed on Wednesday, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s virtual inauguration of several projects in Kolkata, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of Anganwadi and Asha workers, referring to them as “our pride” due to their dedicated and hard work. The monthly salaries for these workers will see an increase from ₹8,250 to ₹9,000, marking a substantial raise of ₹750. Additionally, Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) workers will witness a monthly salary hike of ₹500, elevating their income from ₹6,000 to ₹6,500.
Expressing her support for these essential workers, Mamata Banerjee stated on X (formerly Twitter), “The Asha and Anganwadi workers are our pride as they work very hard. They support us in all the bad times. I wish they do well in life. Maa Maati Maanush government shall always be with the people.”
It is with immense pleasure that I announce that from April, 2024, our ASHA and Anganwadi workers will receive an enhanced remuneration of Rs. 750 every month. Additionally, we've decided to increase the monthly remuneration for our Anganwadi helpers by Rs. 500.

Despite facing financial constraints, the West Bengal Chief Minister reiterated her commitment to ensuring the well-being of the state’s residents. She stated, “Despite the financial constraints imposed on us, we are determined to spare no efforts in ensuring that our people lead happy and prosperous lives!”
The move by Mamata Banerjee aligns with similar actions taken by other states, as both Odisha and Kerala recently increased the remuneration for Anganwadi workers. Anganwadi services, a centrally sponsored scheme, fall under the jurisdiction of state governments and Union territory administrations.
The announcement of the salary hike for Anganwadi and Asha workers coincided with Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration of various Metro projects in Kolkata. These projects included the unveiling of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West underwater corridor and the inauguration of other train services aimed at enhancing urban mobility, such as the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.
